About The West Bank
West Bank is the name of a 5,860 square kilometer land area of the former Palestine, and until the Six Day War in 1967 a part of Jordan. It is bounded to the east of the Jordan River west bank (hence the name) and to the north, west and south of the so-called Green Line, the demarcation carried out under the armistice in 1949 after the Arab-Israeli war, the 1948th

The population of 2,385,615 (estimate from July 2004) is mostly Palestinian. In addition, living there in violation of international law around. 275,000 Israeli settlers in the West Bank and about 200,000 in East Jerusalem. Israel has the superior military control (including the Israeli settlements, rural and border areas). 40% of the area is under limited Palestinian civilian control.

After the Six Day War in 1967 Israel annexed East Jerusalem and regards East Jerusalem as its no longer a part of the West Bank. This annexation is believed to be contrary to international law [citation needed] and is therefore not internationally recognized. It is quite another thing is that East Jerusalem be considered separately from the West Bank only because of the city’s political importance. Oslo Agreement process instance status of East Jerusalem separate from other Palestinian areas.

History
Since the area is defined by the demarcation after the Arab-Israeli war in 1948, this article will not describe the history of the area until 1949. From 1949 to 1967 the area was under Jordanian control after the requirements of the Ceasefire Agreement. After the Six Day War in 1967 came the area under Israeli control, which Israel annexed East Jerusalem. In 1988 Jordan gave up its claim to West Bank.

Oslo Agreement of 1993 stipulated that the final status of the West Bank must be determined in a future agreement between Israel and the Palestinian Authority. Under the Interim Agreement, also known as Oslo II, Israel withdrew from Area A in the West Bank, which was then divided into:

  • (Area A): A Palestinian-controlled Palestinian-administered territory. (Yellow on the map)
  • (Area B): An Israeli control, Palestinian-administered territory. (Pink on the map)
  • (Area C): An Israeli control, Israeli-administered land. (White on card)

Areas B and C includes most of the West Bank, including the rural areas and the Jordan valley, while area A covers most urban areas and hence the majority of the Palestinian population.
