About the Virgin Islands
Virgin Islands are an archipelago in the Caribbean Sea. The islands are divided between the British Virgin Islands (a British overseas territory – main islands: Tortola, Virgin Gorda, Anegada and Jost Van Dyke) to the north and east and the U.S. Virgin Islands (a U.S. territory – main islands: St. Thomas, St. John and St. Croix) to the west and south.
Christopher Columbus named the islands of Santa Ursula y las Once Mil Virgen (shortened to Las Virgen), after Saint Ursula and her 11,000 virgins. Ursula seen in the arms of the British Virgin surrounded by 11 lights, symbolizing the virgins.
At Columbus inhabited islands of Arawak, Carib and cermic Indians, who all died during the colonial period of illness, hard working and direct eradication.
Later the islands with a population of African slaves who worked the sugar plantations (and at least one indigo plantation). Sugar plantations are closed now, but descendants of the slaves still live on the islands and share the Caribbean culture with the other English-speaking Caribbean islands.
There is left running at both the British and American islands, but most cars have the steering wheel to the left (what else is common when driving on the right side). The U.S. dollar is the official currency in both places.
Islands just east of Puerto Rico (and territorially belongs to Puerto Rico), known locally as the Spanish Virgin Islands. These islands are not usually short of the Virgin Islands, but they are actually closer to St. Thomas than St. Croix does.
