About Rwanda

In 1895, Rwanda a German colony and was part of German East Africa. After Germany’s collapse after the first World War II surpassed the colony to Belgium.
In 1959, three years before independence from Belgium, crashed a majority, the Hutus, the ruling Tutsi king. Over several years, thousands of Tutsis were killed and some 150,000 were forced to flee to neighboring countries. Children of these refugees formed a rebel group Rwandan Patriotic Front, and started a civil war in 1990. Reached a truce, but in 1992, war broke out again. The war increased the ethnic antagonisms, and in April 1994, Rwandan President Juvenal Habyarimana and Burundian president Cyprien Ntaryamira both killed in a mortérangreb on their planes as they returned to Kigali after having participated in a peace conference in Tanzania. The assassination was the signal to a genocide over the next 3 months killed 800,000 Tutsis and moderate Hutus life.
Tutsi rebels defeated the Hutu regime and the genocide ended in July 1994. Around 2 millions Hutu fled to neighboring countries because they feared reprisals. Most have since returned.
UN set up after the conflict the International Tribunal for Rwanda to prosecute those responsible for genocide, war crimes, etc..
