About Paraguay
Paraguay is a country in South America. It borders Brazil to the northeast, northwest Bolivia and Argentina to the south and southwest. The country has no access to the sea other than for cargo ships through the river Rio Paraguay, a tributary of the Rio de la Plata in Buenos Aires in Argentina.

Europeans first came to the area early in the 16th century and the founding of the capital Asuncion was the 15th August 1537 by the Spanish explorer Juan de Salazar. Paraguay declared its independence after having taken power from the local Spanish authorities on 14 May 1811 – the first country in South America.

Paraguay’s history has been characterized by long periods of authoritarian governments, political instability and infighting, and devastating wars with its neighbors. Post-colonial decline in 1811 can be divided into several periods:

    The Paraguayske War and the Chaco War were milestones in Paraguay’s history. Paraguay fought the three Allied powers, Brazil, Argentina and Uruguay and was defeated in 1870 after five years of the bloodiest war in America. Paraguay under significant territorial as well as human casualties. Rural areas lost especially to the two great powers Brazil and Argentina. Chaco War was fought with Bolivia in the 1930s and Bolivia was defeated.
