Panama Canal is a great channel that cuts through the narrowest part of Panama, making it possible for ships to take the “shortcut” from the Atlantic to the Pacific and vice versa. 5% of world trade passes through the canal. Canal opened on 15 August 1914.
Panama Canal is about. 81 km long. It has two sets of locks on the Pacific side – Miraflores and Pedro Miguel locks – and one lock – Gatun Lock – on the Atlantic side. Each lock chamber is 305 m long, 33.5 m wide and 26 meters deep. Panamax term used for the largest ships capable crossing the canal.
