About Norfolk Island
Norfolk Island is a volcanic island in the southern part of Melanesia between New Zealand and New Caledonia in the Pacific northwest of the biggest Aotearoaø. The island is an Australian possession and the official language is English. Capital of the island called Kingston.
The island was discovered by Captain James Cook in 1774 on his other trip to the South Pacific. Britain instituted a penal colony on the island in 1788 but was closed again in 1814 when it was impossible to make the island self-sufficient. Penal Colony was opened again in 1825 and closed in 1855. It is said to punish the colony was so discouraging that the condemned man would rather be executed than being sent to Norfolk Island. In 1913 it was transferred to the Australian Government Overseas Territory.
