The Netherlands Antilles are part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. It is a popular destination for many tourists. Besides tourism, the islands’ economy depends heavily on oil.
The islands were discovered in late 1400-century and in 1634 acquired by the West Indian Company from Spain. Throughout history islands have been in the hands of other European great powers and has known various forms of government. This status as a colony ending 15 December 1954, when the statutes of the Dutch Kingdom was signed after eight years of negotiations between the Netherlands, Suriname and the Netherlands Antilles. On 25 November 1975 was Suriname, however, totally independent.
The first January 1986 showed Aruba a status aparte. This meant that Aruba was granted the status as a nation within the Kingdom as being the first independent January 1996. The basis for independence, and thus the special status in 1994 was rejected by Aruba. Since then, consists Kingdom formally of the Netherlands Antilles (five islands), Aruba and the Netherlands.
