After the German colonists had come to Namibia in the late 1800′s, was friction between the Germans and especially Hererofolket escalated, and the German use of here oarsmen, a nomadic people with large herds of cattle which wandered between Angola and the current Namibia to find pasture, resulted in 1904 in that here the rowers did violent rebellion and the first few days were more than 150 Germans were killed. Typical of the rebellion was to here oarsmen went outside the Dutch, British and missionary houses, and only specifically for Germans. After the Germans had a small army sent home from Germany, they began to penetrate here rowers back. the approx. 6000 soldiers were led by the tough Lieutenant General von Trotha. The “Battle of Waterberg” in 1905, the remaining tribal warriors and their families surrounded by the approximately 2000 German commandos who were part of the battle. Although there was a size ratio between the two armies at 3:1 to here oarsmen advantage, the Germans managed to squeeze them into the desert behind the plateau. Von Trotha set at the start of the battle an iron ring on the plateau but failed to close the ring, so there was an escape route out of the desert. Since here the rowers had fled the Germans sent troops to poison water holes and kill the survivors that may remain. This hard thirsty journey through the desert almost exterminated hererofolket that eventually reached into the British territory, where they received asylum from failing to continue the struggle.

In 1966, SWAPO guerrillas began an independence war in the region, but South Africa did not recognize their independence until 1988, when the UN had produced a peace plan for the entire region.
