Mauritius is an island located in the middle of the Indian Ocean around. 900 km east of Madagascar. The island has an area of approx. 1900 km ². Large parts of the island is covered with green sugar cane plantations in okkerrød soil.
History of Mauritius
The island has been known by the Arabs since the 900-century Portuguese came as the first Europeans to the island in the 1505th The Dutch colonized the island in 1638 and named the island after Prince Morits of Nassau. Mauritius was the fifth country worldwide in 1847 to issue stamps for Great Britain in 1840, Brazil in 1843 and Switzerland and the U.S. in 1846 (and the first country in the Commonwealth).
Mauritius first edition of their stamps, the “POST OFFICE” (27 copies known in the world today) is rated as the world’s most expensive and rarest stamps. Two of them (together in 1 envelope, “The Mauritius Bordeaux Cover”) has been sold in 1993 for five million U.S. dollars to David Feldman SA.
