The Lao PDR is a state in Southeast Asia and member of ASEAN, which borders Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand, Myanmar and China. The capital is Vientiane (Viangchan).

History of Laos
Laos’s early history was dominated the large Nanzhao kingdom, which was followed in the 14th century by the local kingdom of Lan Xang which lasted until the 18th century, after which Thailand assumed control of the separate kingdoms remaining. These came under French influence during the 19th century and became part of French Indochina in 1893. After the Japanese occupation during the second World War the country became independent in 1949 as the Kingdom of Laos, under King Sisavang Vong management.
Political unrest in neighboring Vietnam dragged Laos into the Indochinese war (see also Secret War), a destabilizing factor that contributed to civil war and several coups. In 1975 kuppede Communist Pathet Lao party with help from the Soviet Union and Communist Vietnam, the Royal Government, which had great support from the U.S. and France, forcing King Savang Vatthana to abdicate second December 1975. After obtaining control over land, they renamed it immediately to the Lao People’s Republic. The close ties with Vietnam in the early and socialism was gradually given way to freer economic conditions in the late 1980s and joined ASEAN in 1997, but the country still leading socialist politics, and many social reforms being carried out. Today, the country also supported by socialist presidents such as Hugo Chavez. Russia continues to provide also financial support to the country.
