Korea or the Republic of Korea, also called South Korea, is a country in Asia. North Korea is the only neighboring country. The country lies on the southern part of the Korean peninsula between the Sea of Japan and the Yellow Sea. South Korea is the unofficial name of the Republic of Korea.
South Korea’s history
The Korean peninsula’s history is dominated by the neighboring countries’ power requirements. For Korea’s past history, see main article of Korea.
Between 1876 and 1894 Japan increased its influence in Korea. The Japanese trade through coercion, and in 1894 was a rebellion put down by Chinese troops invited and uninvited Japanese troops. After winning attack Japan Chinese, who after a year of war had to renounce their thousand year old suzerainty over Korea, there was now an independent country. After the victory appeared Japan as Korea’s ruler, and forced many reforms through. But the King hid himself in the Russian Embassy, which provided him with protection. In 1897 he felt confident again and left the embassy, and was the same year was crowned emperor, to show that it was now independent of both Japan and China. And the country changed its name from the Choson Teahan Cheguk (the big He empire.) But in 1905 Japan won a war against Russia and called for Korea as war booty. The Emperor was demoted to the king, an official who must answer to the Japanese government was established and the name was again Choson.
The Japanese ruled the country hard and brutal, until after the second World War II when the country was liberated after the Japanese surrender, the Soviet Union occupied the country north of the 38th latitude, and the U.S. South. The current division of the peninsula from the ceasefire line along the 38th latitude, which was formed after the Korean War. South Korea fell, like Japan, under the U.S. sphere of interest, and its economy was supported by the U.S.. The country was a military dictatorship to the mid-1980s.
