The fertile area of Mesopotamia between the rivers Euphrates and Tigris, have brought us some of the world’s oldest civilizations, such as the Sumerians, Babylonians and Assyrians. It was long a part of Persia, but in 656 it was conquered by the Arabs, and in 762 moved the caliphate to the new city of Baghdad (near ancient Babylon). This city remained the center of the Arab world until it was included in the Ottoman Empire in 1534. In 1915, British troops occupied Iraq, and it ended with independence in 1932.
The socialist Ba’ath party led by Adnan Al-Wali and Saddam Hussein, they gained control in 1968 and started a strict regime. In the 1980s, Iraq engaged in a long war with neighboring Iran, it ended in 1988.
In population terms, Iraq is dominated by 3 major groups: Shiites in the south, Sunni Muslims in central Iraq and Kurds in the north. These groupings are often recur locally divided into city and family clans. In addition, in Iraq many minority groups including Turkmen and Christians. Shiites and Sunnis are Arab nations, unlike the Kurds, a northern people, spread over 5 countries.
Since the Ba’ath Party, which is mainly led by Sunni, came to power, there have been periodic purges of non-Sunnis place. Especially the Kurds have been persecuted, and they have been displaced from large areas, which will have been populated by moving to the south, most Sunnis. Shiites have also suffered heavy losses, especially in 1991 after the Gulf War, which both Kurds and Shiites rebellion was crushed with an iron fist.
