Europa Island
Europa Island is a tropical island of 28 km ², in the Mozambique Channel, about midway between southern Madagascar and southern Mozambique, at coordinates 22 ° 20′S 40 ° 22′E / 22,333 40,367 ° S ° E / -22,333, 40,367. It has a coastline of 22.2 kilometers, but no port or bay, only offshore anchorage. Covered by mangrove forests and woodlands, is an important refuge for wildlife, but has modest natural resources for human life.
The island is a French possession since 1897, but is claimed by Madagascar.
The island has no indigenous population or economic activities, is a resident of a French military garrison that maintains operational meteorological station and an unpaved runway for aircraft about 1,000 feet long.
