Dominica
Dominica is an island nation in the eastern part of the Caribbean Sea on the border to the Atlantic. It is part of the Lesser Antilles.
History
Dominica was originally inhabited by Carib Indians, with their hostile mind managed to keep all those European interests in check in to 1759, when the British won supremacy and established a colony on the island. Since introduced African slaves to work in the newly established plantations. The flow of foreigners were to reduce Indian influence, but it is currently managed by approximately 3,000 of their descendants to establish their own isolated communities on the island. In 1978 the country achieved independence.
Geography
Dominica is also called “naturøen”because of its rich biodiversity and lush forests. At the same time, the island is the most mountainous of the Lesser Antilles, Morne Diablotin form with its 1,447 meters the highest point. Dominica center consists of a massive hill, from which several rivers draining the lowlands along the coast. The island is famous for its hot springs and kraterrør. The fertile, volcanic soil is the basis for near tropical vegetation covering 41% of Dominica’s surface. The substratum is very poor in natural resources. The only mineral is pumice is exported.
