History
Cuba and its indigenous people came under Spanish control in the 16th century. Independence struggle began in 1868 and continued in the 19th century until the Spanish-American War in 1898. USA captured during this war the island, which gained independence in 1902. USA continued however to have considerable control over the Cuban situation.

A rebel army of Fidel Castro at the head toppled President Fulgencio Batista in 1959. After the change of power feared the U.S. that the revolution would lead to a communist state in Cuba and the two countries’ relationship deteriorated drastically. Following the introduction of the U.S. trade embargo in 1960, turned Cuba against the Soviet Union, as they concluded a series of trade agreements, while Fidel Castro in 1961 declared Cuba a socialist state. A Soviet-inspired constitution was introduced in 1976.

After the Soviet collapse in 1991 the country was hit by economic decline. In an attempt to reverse the decline have been conducted various economic and political reforms.
