Cook Islands

Cook Islands is a self-governing territory under New Zealand. The islands have about 20,000 residents spread over approx. 240 km ². In addition offshore Cook Islands Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), which covers a total of 1.8 million square kilometers of the Pacific.

Island covers a total of 15 islands, 12 of which were inhabited during the last census first December 2006, when the total population was estimated at 19,569. About half of the population lives on the island of Rarotonga where the island state’s capital Avarua is located and where there is also the international airport. Main source of income is tourism, in addition to activities in agriculture and fishing.

Cook Islands has a close relationship with New Zealand, they use New Zealand dollar (NZD) supplemented by local coins (a big selling item for tourists) and the older local banknotes in mint foot Cook Islands dollars. Additionally, the close relationship to New Zealand led to that estimated by be around 45,000 people of Cook origin of the North Island of New Zealand.
