Comoros

Comoros is an archipelago in the Indian Ocean in the Mozambique Channel between Madagascar’s northern mouth of the north tip of the African continent. Most of the islands is limited to small reef, but the four largest, Grande Comore, Anjouan, Mayotte and Mohéli is of volcanic origin and constitute the bulk of the area. The islands are located at 12 degrees south latitude and 44 degrees east longitude.

Comoros consists of the islands of Grande Comore, Anjouan and Mohéli, while Mayotte is a French department.

History of the Comores

The Arabs have known since second Comoros century AD, and even after Europeans discovered the islands in the 16th century, they acted increasingly as a trading post for the Arabs, who used the islands as a terminal for the slaves and spices. From 1843-1909 the country was a colony of France, 1947 gave the country the status of overseas territory and in 1961 it was granted internal autonomy. After a vote declaring the islands for the sovereign and the final independence was donated in 1975. The following year chose Mayotte however to pull out and joined again to France. In all that time, the country has been independent, it has experienced no less than twenty political coup, in 1992, President Djohar overturned the Constitution, but unfortunately it made no boom for the many riots that ravaged the country. In 1995, a coup error. In 1996 Mohamed Taki Abdoulkarim, a competitor to Djohar, elected president. He introduced an Islamic constitution and made the country into a theocracy; after Takis deaths fell power in 1999 at the hands of Col. Assoumane.
