Colombia
Colombia is a country in northern South America, bordering the Caribbean Sea between Panama and Venezuela, and bordering on the Pacific Ocean between Ecuador and Panama. Colombia is thus the only country in South America with both Pacific coast and Caribbean coast. Its capital is Bogota, which lies at 2640 meters and is the world’s third highest situated capital.

Spanish explorers arrived in the area around 1500 and met the Caribbean and Chibcha peoples. Colombia became independent from Spain in 1819 in a union with Ecuador and Venezuela. Panama was a Colombian province until the 1903rd
In the following period there was regularly wars and civil wars. The most serious was in the 1940s and 1950s and became known as La Violencia (The violence). The hostilities claimed at least 180,000 victims. In recent times the country has been plagued by drug showdown and guerrilla groups like FARC. These groups often resort to kidnapping and drug trafficking to finance their struggle. Since 2000, the government has been running a campaign to reduce crime in society and claim to have had success with this, since the number of kidnappings and murders have declined, respectively. 61% and 48%. The opposition doubts, however sometimes these figures and criticize the government for human rights have been violated.
