Chile

Chile, officially the Republic of Chile (Spanish: República de Chile) is a country located on the southwestern coast of South America between the Andes and the Pacific. Chile borders Argentina, Bolivia and Peru.

History of Chile

Chile became an independent state in 1810 after having been a Spanish colony. The independence marked the beginning of a long democratic tradition that lasted up to 1973. The only interruptions were the periods of anarchy in the 1830s and 1930s. In 1970, Salvador Allende elected president of Chile. Allende was a socialist and nationalized his time, among other things, the US-owned copper mines. He was thwarted by both domestic and American firms, and by the CIA. This led to Allende was overthrown and killed by military coup in 1973. Until 1990 the country was governed by a military dictatorship led by Augusto Pinochet, when the democratically elected President Patricio Aylwin took over.
