History

The territory which today constitutes the Central African Republic, was a French colony in the late 19th century. After the country became an independent republic in 1960, it was more than three decades, driven by changing dictators. In the period 1976-79, the country was an empire under Emperor Bokassa first, under his real name Jean-Bedel Bokassa had been president since 1966. He was deposed in 1979 and subsequently became the country again for a republic with Bokassa predecessor David Dacko as president for a second time. This was overthrown in a coup in 1981 and then was André Kolingba president until 1993, when the first free democratic elections in its history was held. This election was won by Ange-Félix Patassé, but after he had lost public support, he was in 2003 deposed by General François Bozizé. After having served as president for two years was Bozizé elected democratically in 2005.
