Albania
Republic of Albania is a country in southeastern Europe . It shares borders with Kosovo in the north, Montenegro to the northwest, Macedonia in the east and Greece in the south. The coastline west of the country consists of the Adriatic and the Ionian Sea to the south west.
History
From second – 4 century the area was part of the Roman Empire . The following 1000 years, it was part of the Greek-speaking Others place. Skanderbeg who was later hailed as Albania’s national hero, gave the Turks the bar until his death. Then came around 500 years of Turkish domination that ended only with the Balkan Wars and Albania’s independence in 1912.
After the first Balkan War, Albania declared itself in 1912 independence from the Ottoman Empire . The situation in the country was still turbulent. During the second World War II the country was occupied by Italy , but had a mainly Communist resistance movement under Enver Hoxha , who took power when the Italians left the country.
Until 1990 , five years after Hoxha’s death, Albania was a very isolated state .
A multiparty system is being stabilized, but the country is characterized by very serious economic problems, lacking investment and there are problems with infrastructure and electricity supply. Furthermore, there is some corruption, a large ‘black’ economy and an extensive organized crime. Various activities aimed at combating these problems until now 2005 only succeeded partially.
In 1997 broke out armed insurrection and military arsenals were looted. The occasion was that more entities who had arranged pyramid ventures had collapsed and many Albanians lost their savings. A NATO force under Italian leadership – and with participation from several countries, including Denmark – were deployed to ensure calm and order. President Sali Berisha was forced to resign, and before that to release the prominent Socialist leader Fatos Nano . After the parliamentary elections the Socialists came to power.
In September 1998 were perpetrated an attack against a prominent democratic politician Azem Hajdari , which broke out riots. Fatos Nano fled abroad and was replaced by another Socialist leader Pandeli Majko .
In one thousand nine hundred ninety-eight – 1 999 were received large numbers of refugees from Kosovo .
Albania seeks to join NATO and the EU , and supports U.S. military in Afghanistan and Iraq . EU, World Bank and Others In recent years criticized the many problems, but looks relatively optimistic in development, so has the EU in late 2005 decided to cooperate with Albania at a higher level than hitherto.
Since the Hoxha regime’s collapse, Albania has been ruled by the Democrats under Sali Berisha, socialists and others Finally, under Fatos Nano and from elections in 2005 again by the Democrats and Others under Sali Berisha. Socialists’ defeat led to Fatos Nano resigned as party chairman and replaced by Tirana Mayor Edi Rama , a former minister in a Socialist-led government. Pandeli Majko was also elected as Secretary General of the Socialists.
